Kevin Durant, Odell Beckham Jr., St. Louis Cardinals Invest In Esports
Golden State Warriors star Kevin Durant, New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and the St. Louis Cardinals are among the participants in a $38 million capital raise for esports investment fund and management company Vision Esports, it was announced Thursday. The New York Yankees had announced in October an investment partnership with Vision Esports. The two organizations are managing Vision Esports properties Echo Fox, video performance validation company Twin Galaxies and production studio Vision Entertainment.
Vision Esports now becomes the largest shareholders in those properties. Durant’s investment with business partner Rich Kleiman through the Durant Management Company signals the NBA Finals MVP’s continued interest in expanding his portfolio. The Durant Company in December announced it was an angel seed investor in sports media company Overtime. It’s esports that is growing and attracting star athletes in their 20s like Durant and Beckham along with owners from traditional sports to invest. The Cardinals are the latest baseball team to get involved.

The move made UCI the first public university to offer an official program for esports. UCI was also one of the first schools to begin a scholarship program around esports, offering top gamers $5,610 and $2,500 to join its League of Legends and Overwatch teams, respectively. For teams, the program provides a personal trainer, team psychologist and a host of team-building activities that help gamers socialize outside of virtual realms, Deppe said. The school also charges non-team gamers for their time in the arena. Deppe’s work is paying off: UCI’s Overwatch team is playing UC San Diego for the national title in two weeks with 16 wins and no losses under its belt.
The esports chief flagged one obstacle for big-name organizations like the NCAA that are interested in entering the space. As top gaming companies like Activision-Blizzard race to develop the next major multi-played competition games, Deppe said he could see even bigger players like Amazon entering the industry.
